The Believer's Obligation to Peace Among Each Other

by Pastor Art Kohl
I. Definition of Peace: "To Keep Still. To refrain from toiling. Refrain from speech. Be calm as quiet water. To not speak or hear in the sense of being deaf or dumb in the sight or sound of trouble." The word "peace" is found 408 times in the Bible.

II. Things that make for Peace.

Romans 14:19, "Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another." What then are the things which make for peace?:

    1. God - Job 22:21, "Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee." 1 Corinthians 7:15, "But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases: but God hath called us to peace."

    2. The Word of God - John 16:33, "These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world."

    3. Being Spiritually Minded - Romans 8:6, "For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace."

    4. Having Faith - Romans 15:13, "Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost."

    5. Doing Good Works - Romans 2:10, "But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:" Philippians 4:9, "Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you."

    6. Prayer - Philippians 4:6-7, "Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."

    7. Like Mindedness - 2 Corinthians 13:11, "Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you."

III. Our Obligations.

After defining Peace, and doing the things that make for peace, what are our obligations to it?:

    1. Seek Peace - Psalms 34:14, "Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it."

    2. Pursue Peace - Psalms 34:14, "Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it."

    3. Make Peace - Matthew 5:9, "Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God."

    4. Have Peace - Mark 9:50, "Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another."

    5. Preach Peace - Romans 10:15, "And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!" Ephesians 2:17, "And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh."

    6. Live Peace - Romans 12:18, "If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men." 1 Timothy 2:2, "For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty."

    7. Follow Peace - Hebrews 12:14, "Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:"
